While MMA is one of the most popular sports in the world, there are problems with it. Let’s be honest, while some fellow is using that Gracie Jujitsu to apply a lock or hold, he is rolling around and vulnerable to an attack from his opponents friends. Not to mention that it is not always the most intelligent thing to roll around on the ground while some fellow is trying to penetrate your body with a knife or broken bottle.
I know I have offended some MMA stylists out there, but these are questions that people should not hide from. After all, the ring looks like the final statement on fighting, but biting is a problem in a real fight. And getting your fingers broken or your eyes gouged is always a possibility when you fall on the ground and wrestle around.

I know there will be people who will disagree with me, but I was there forty years ago, and I know the truth. The truth is that the karate fighters of forty years ago, students of Shotokan and Wado Ryu and Uechi Ryu, and especially Kyokushinkai, could have taken todays mixed martial arts fighters apart quickly and easily. There are quite a few reasons for this, and I will go over just one of the main ones in this article.
Before I tread where fans don’t know about…let me say that yesterdays culture was drug free, full of physical cultists, and we had our share of martial maniacs. We did things that todays martial artists would not dare to do. All of the things that were done were done with fanaticism and dedication far beyond that shown by todays UFC fighters.

Yoon Bying In wanted to study kung fu more than anything he had ever wanted, yet the kung fu master in his town refused to teach Koreans. Time after time Yoon had been caught peeking in windows at the classes, and he had been chased away by the master. Then Yoon was struck by a fantastic idea.
During class he snuck up and arranged the shoes of the students in a neat line on the front porch. He then retreated and watched for the master of kung fu to step out of the school and find them. The kung fu master was pleased at this display of respect, and he wondered what polite citizen had done such a polite thing.

I grew up in the fifties, and this strange thing called Karate exploded onto the scene. Frail women could use it to take down savage brutes. Even a child could use it to protect himself against the bullies.
Unfortunately, very few have ever seen the true side of Karate. I studied something called Kang Duk Won back in the sixties and seventies, and Kang Duk Won proved the exception. With Kang Duk Won Korean Karate, which was a forerunner of Tae Kwon Do, the rumors were true, even women and children could use the art to protect themselves.

Barring the use of real and actual weapons, the kick is your longest range weapon. Being the longest range weapon, it is the first zone of defense you have should you meet an attacker. And, should there be actual weapons involved in the fray, having a good and advanced kicking ability may be the advantage you need to survive the encounter.
There are many types of kicks. Unfortunately, many kicks are for show. This article will stay away from kicks where one turns his back, or otherwise reveals weakness during the technique.
