Nowadays, Tai Chi exercises are taught more for their therapeutic purposes than for the exercise itself. While some enjoyed meditating with Tai Chi, others did Tai Chi as a compliment to their dancing which is much like ballet. The Tai Chi exercises are executed slowly in a series of slow dance steps, and could require a substantial amount of effort, both physical and mental. That is the main reason Tai Chi exercises are highly regarded since it harmonizes the coordination of body and mind.

Chi Exercises

Working on breathing is a simple Tai Chi exercise. Chi is the most well known spelling, but it can also be spelled ‘Qi’. Tai Chi is supposed to be meditative, but you do not need to be trance-like while doing it. You begin the breathing exercise by getting into the ‘Horseback Riding’ position. Stand with your back completely straight and a level chin. Have your legs around 3ft apart and gently bend legs until they are around 90 degrees, no more. This may be tough on your legs when you first start, but it maintains the best balance overall for your body. Next hold both of your arms straight in front of you, and exhale calmly and deeply. Do this until you no longer have any breath at all within your lungs. Next you slowly bring your arms in towards your chest, turning your palms inwards you are left with your hands almost touching your chest. Inhale smoothly.

This exercise has been found effective for several things. When I was a student of Kung Fu, my teacher instructed me to master this practice early on in my lessons. I have found many uses for it. Once used as a conditioning tool for lessons, I now use it a calming tool for interviews. It’s also an excellent exercise for cardiovascular health. By inhaling deeply and slowly, you are able to completely fill your lungs, and when you slowly force out all the air, you also force out the bad elements that are trapped in your lungs. However, even this will not do much to clear actual carcinogens from your lungs.

The Grinding Corn Exercise

This exercise is commonly practiced by monks, and it can be used as a warm up or to aid in meditation. To begin you must again attain the ‘Horseback Riding’ position. While in this position you must hold your arms in front of you and turn them as if you were grinding imaginary corn with an old stone grinder. Do this movement slowly, and change directions from time to time.

You thighs will feel the strain with this exercise, but you will also find your core muscles working to keep yourself solid. Once you become adept at this exercise you can hold weights to make it more difficult and give yourself more of a workout.

This is going to be the weirdest tai chi lesson you have ever had. I’ve never had a lesson in tai chi, you see, but my tai chi chuan is the best. I don’t mean to be self serving, but let us see what you think after you have read how I came up with my tai chi.

I began learning tai chi with a book, Modified Tai Chi for Health by Lee Ying Arng. Every night I spent hours memorizing the form, trying to figure out the applications, trying to figure out the meaning. And, tell the truth, it didn’t mean much.

So I went through books by Chen Man Ching, and I read Chen and Yang and Wu and Sun, but they all spoke this gobbledegook that didn’t make sense. So I began doing my Karate, I had near ten years experience in Kang Duk Won karate, and the thing started to resolve. I was using good, old karate power to juice up the form, and it worked, and then I was able to make what was happening into Tai Chi power.

More important, I was neglecting all the bushwah philosophy and mysticism in the books and using physics. The martial arts, you see, are taught through the memorization of random strings of data. In physics you look for a reason, and a logic, and you define a concept.

Now, ancient stories claim tai chi was created in a dream by san feng after he watched a bird and a snake fight. Or, it was started by a general in a village, who was retired from war and wanted to make up games for the children. Neither of these concepts have much verifiable validity, but we can’t just discount them out of hand.

Maybe the general was old, couldn’t do the martial arts proper, and so he moved slowly, so as not to hurt himself, and actually came up with something. And the vision of the snake and the crane, though I like physics I would not dare to disclaim the value of visions, which are dreams and inspiration, and at the heart of mankind. Still, whether rehabilitation of the infirm, or big dreams, tai chi does not make sense without physics.

So this is what I want you to do, I want you to get a book on physics. Make it a simple kids book, simple pictures for illustrations, that sort of thing. It would really help if it was aimed at describing a motor.

Now, go over that book, and make lists of the terms are the same as in tai chi chuan. Rooting is grounding, what are these things called leads, where is the generator, and so on. Do that, and when the deep innards of your tai chi chuan start to reposition, do not come complaining to me.

Al Case has studied martial arts 4O years. He began Tai Chi Chuan in 1974, became a writer for the mags in 1981, and originated Matrixing Technolgy, which is the study of physics in the martial arts. You can get a free ebook on Matrixing at Monster Martial Arts.

Tai Chi is believed to have beneficial effects on health. It can increase energy flow which results to an increase in strength and harmony in your body system. In fact, practitioners of Tai Chi have testified about how the meditative and calming aspect of Tai Chi have helped them eliminate stress brought about by their daily workloads.

Tai Chi, as an exercise can improve muscle tone and enhance the individual’s sense of flexibility and balance. Indeed, Tai Chi shows a resemblance to the concept of Yin and Yang where force s expresses in a most harmonious and balance form.

Aside from relaxing the mind and enriching the soul, Tai Chi can also prevent complications of certain illnesses. Over all, it is a very good way of maintaining good health and wellness inside and out. However, it doesn’t mean that Tai Chi is a disease-curing technique nor it can be a replacement to your medicines. Tai Chi is somewhat a form of therapy to consider – a therapy that gives you the following benefits:

Balance

One of the major causes of disability and death among the elderly is loss of coordination which often leads them to fall. By practicing Tai Chi, balance and coordination especially to the elderly can be improved, thus avoiding the risk of falling and death.

Lessens Pain

Tai Chi can help in improving the flexibility of the bones and joints by introducing a range of motion to the arthritic joint without feeling any pain. It is not to be addressed that Tai Chi can cure arthritis. The least it can do is to lessen its severity and the contributing pain by working on those joints as soon as possible.

Circulation

Problems regarding the circulatory system can be addressed by Tai Chi. By practicing Tai Chi, it will enable your heart to pump enough blood all throughout your body and stabilizing your blood circulation.

Multiple Sclerosis

Through Tai Chi, one can reduce the risk of having a multiple sclerosis. Indeed, can improve ones mental and physical well-being.

Banish Stress

Who would want stress? Although, stress is inevitable it surely can be prevented. Tai Chi and its meditation function can reduce the production of toxins and hormones that contribute stress which is directly reflected into your body.

So, if you want to learn Tai Chi and be benefitted by it, look for someone who has been practicing and mastering Tai Chi to train you through.

Anyone can do Tai Chi: young or old unless completely disabled. Those who are already old, especially those with existing health problems, must consult their physicians first before engaging in Tai Chi.

Make sure to inform your instructor of any health problems you have. Make your instructor know, so that he or she can make certain measures to provide you with the ability to do such required movements. Doing Tai Chi must not make you feel any pain and if you do feel any pain, tell your instructor at instant.

Forget everything you thought you knew about living a healthy life because you won?t be able to have it when what you are sustaining is just your physical body. Overall health isn?t just about physical wellness. This website, Tai Chi in Santa Monica, shatters the current myths and gives it to you straight.

Derived from the Taiji symbol which, in the Western areas is known as the yin and yang, Tai Chi was said to be the practice that preserved the oldest schools of learning which study the receptive and active principles.

As a practice, Tai Chi’s core training features 2 forms: first, the solo form, which stresses slow sequence of movements while keeping the spine straight and firm, maintaining the range of motion and constant breathing. The Push Hands being the second core of Tai Chi training involves training of the principles of movement in a manner that is more practical and convenient.

As the word implies, the solo form of Tai Chi, requires only the one person to conquer the movements. It would take the students through a natural and complete range of motion over gravity’s center. If repeated accurately, the practice of the solo form can retain posture, maintain honest flexibility going through the joints and muscles, encourage proper circulation from any point of the student’s body, and let students be more familiarized with some of the important martial art application sequences that are usually implied by the different forms.

Major styles of traditional Tai Chi have forms that somewhat differ from the others in its presentation. Some differ in the wave of the hands, in the position of the legs, the reaction of the body and the pace of the movement. But these things don’t matter at all because what is important to Tai Chi practice is that it benefits not just your body but your mind as well. And besides, there are still many similarities coming from the point of their common origin that are obvious enough to recognize, anyway.

Solo forms, weapons and empty-hands are movements that are commonly practiced individually in martial arts application and pushing hands. Scenarios like these are intended to prepare the students for training of self-defense.

The philosophy goes: if one becomes stiff and equally uses hardness in attending to violence, otherwise resisting it, then it is expected that both sides can be injured at a certain degree. An injury like that is a Tai Chi theory that coincides with the consequence of fighting brute with brute, which, in Tai Chi is far beyond the right attitude and style.

While in other martial arts force is applied to some measure, in Tai Chi, the use of subtle movements and softness in facing a battle is a great contributing factor in order to end up victorious. With Tai Chi, you just follow every attacking motion and in the end exhaust the attacking force. Such is the Tai Chi principle wherein the yin and yang is applied – the primary goal in the Tai Chi discipline.

Aside from discipline, Tai Chi schools also put their concentration on how the energy of a striking person will bring damage to his opponent. Say for example, you can use your palm to hit your opponent looking the same and performing the same but with a different impact on the target.

With your palm you can push a person forward or backward, do it in such a way that the opponents are lifted vertically from the ground, this way their center of gravity will be shaken and eventually fall.

Then, you can finish your opponent with a final blow bringing traumatic internal damage.

Forget everything you thought you knew about living a healthy life because you won?t be able to have it when what you are sustaining is just your physical body. Overall health isn?t just about physical wellness. This website, Tai Chi Los Angeles, shatters the current myths and gives it to you straight.

The first thing you are going to have to learn is that it doesn’t take decades to learn such arts as Tai Chi Chuan or Pa Kua Chang or Aikido. Look, the army makes soldiers in a handful of months, and that includes some high tech stuff! And, when you add up the actual hours spent on that college course, it doesn’t take that long to make a teacher or a computer expert.

The idea that it takes immense amounts of time is something that has been foisted on us by people who want to make money. After all, the longer somebody studies, the longer they pay the fees for that cultural dojo box, the…do you get the idea. So get over the idea that it takes time, and get used to learning fast!

Now, to master something like pa kua chang you need to draw a circle about six feet across, and which takes exactly eight steps to pace around. You need to situate the circle so it is centered in the room, which means that if you straightened up every two steps you would be facing a wall. Now you need to grab a three day weekend to learn and master this art.

The first rule in walking the circle is to keep the hips low to the floor and move them at a slow and even rate of speed. The second rule is to breath at an even rate and harmonize the movements of your hands and feet so they move at the same slow rate of speed, starting and finishing techniques at the same time. The third rule is to be willing to separate yourself from the regular universe, let your attention slide off the the trees and fences, the tables and chairs, as you walk in a circle.

Now, you need basics that actually work and make sense and are logical. Examine karate for basic blocks, and curve the arms to adapt them to Pa Kua Chang. Things can get complex, so I would recommend taking the four basic blocks, hi, low, in and out, and working with them to start.

Now take a step on the circle and do a slow and circular block, making the largest circles you can make with your arms. Though you have only taken one step, let your body pivot to its limits, and don’t let the block finish until you have reached that limit. When you reach the end of your body limits, reverse your turn and start a long and slow second block. Take a step as you do that second turn and block, and, again, let your body turn to its limit.

Keeping the hips tucked under will help you keep your spine from being injured, place the feet flat and seek total contact with the ground, and search for graceful movements. Be a contortionist in slow motion, slowly spinning and whirling, exploring the limits of motion. Put all self-doubts out of your mind, and let a few hours reveal the truth of Pa Kua Chang to you.

The last thing is to search for function, because if it doesn’t work, you shouldn’t be doing it. So have a friend strike slowly at you, and walk a small circle around him, letting your block encircle his limb, and you will find all sorts of stuff. Now, I know this all sounds simple, but let me make a point…this is exactly how such arts as Tai Chi, Pa Kua and Aikido were discovered in the first place!

Al Case has examined martial arts for 40 years, and has written hundreds of articles for the major magazines. He can teach almost anybody how to learn almost any art within a couple of months. Complete data, including a free ebook, is available at Monster Martial Arts.

by Walter McKibben

Tai Chi is not just about the mere swing of the arm or the slight movement of the feet. There is a meaning behind every movement and change of style that is performed. These concepts led the way to building every Tai Chi form. So you have to pay close attention on every action because even though it seem so basic, they are indeed essential.

By being able to remember the concepts of Tai Chi, you’ll develop an open mind for you to appreciate the form you are learning.

Concept #1

Tai Chi is done with an emphasis on every movement. The fashion of every pattern must be in connected with one another. Meaning, if every motion made must always start from the spine, move down to the waist, legs and feet, then it is simultaneously going up the body from the legs, through the waist, then the arms, hands and last, the fingers.

Concept #2

Maintain your shoulders dropped so that any tension will be eliminated. Shoulders that are always propped are said to have overflowing tension.

Concept #3

Maintain a straight wrists in order to keep your arms and hands supple and open to energy. This allows the energy to flow, not just through your arms, but is an important part of learning to move the energy throughout the body.

Concept #4

Slow motion is one of the best ways to achieve mastery. It can never be overlooked because if the slow rate of your motions is performed with continuous smoothness, this will improve the connection of your body to your environment.

Concept #5

Never let anything disconnect you. You should always stay connected with every movement. If you have been disconnected, continue to perform the movements and listen to your body so that you can overcome any distraction.

Concept #6

Your knees must always be bent during the entire form. Your height must not bob down and up. There are some considerations but all the while, your height must always be maintained at a level that is constant.

Concept #7

The power of Tai Chi travels parallel from its movement. It will start from the feet, going up the legs, being directed through the waist, to be expressed finally, by the hands and fingers.

Concept #8

Your head must be maintained as if it was suspended on air.

Concept #9

Your chest must be depressed and your back should be raised but this must be done without exerting any force.

Concept #10

Your breath must be focused on your dan-tien but force must not be exerted. As time in the program may pass, there will be accomplishments that will fulfill you like synchronizing your breathing with the movements that you make.

You should always consult your teacher when to exhale or inhale.

It is a loser as far as weapons go. Thin and underweight, it is not able to take the bashing of force like a full grown sabre would. Having curve only at the tip, it is not able to slice through mighty armor as would a legendary samurai sword.

Yet, in the skinny is the strength. And in the lack of curve is the art. Indeed, the tai chi sword may be the ultimate weapon.

Skinny, it is light and quick, more like a knitting needle than a sword. Yet a knitting needle carves the most beautiful garments. And to watch knitting needles in the hands of a practiced granny is to see the twinkling of art come alive.

At the far end of the length of steel the tip curves, a mere inch of cutting surface. Yet, any person who has experienced the sharp scratch of needle tip knows its potency. Indeed, the mere scratch of a needle tip can leave a jagged wound that is unwilling to readily repair itself.

The real point here is that such a fine and delicate tool is not meant for bashing or massive slicing any more than a doctors scalpel is meant for pounding in nails. It is meant for reaching in, past the guard and the swing, and tipping. It is meant for the delicate move which slides in past, over and under the basher and the cutter.

A delicate insertion of the wicked, little tip, a quick flick of the firm and practiced wrist, and the aims of the warrior are attained. This art, this true art, is an appreciation of the sphere of space surrounding true warrior. This appreciation of space is truly at the heart of all martial arts.

Bashers and cutters, not to be disrespectful, are but fence painters, splashing their liquids indiscriminately, and ruling by dint of whatever force they can muster. The wielder of the slight and skinny tai chi sword, however, is a doctor, an artist, and a sculptor. He rules by by dint of his endeavors to seek and make flourish intelligence.

For he who holds the tai chi sword must hold sway by exercising the intelligence to perceive, and thus undo, the force of the basher and the ruthlessness of the cutter. He must undercut brute force with intelligence to prove himself. Therein is the striving, the accomplishment, and the art, for the true artist to behold.

Al Case has studied tai chi for 3O+ years. You can get a copy of his ebook at Monster Martial Arts.
