			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Although ninja training involves the use of several different weapons, no weapon is as uniquely ninja as the throwing star, or shuriken. In movies, ninjas are shown throwing stars with increadible accuracy, but a beginner would be doing well to hit the side of a van parked twenty feet away.</p>
<p>As is the case with any type of ninja training, practice is the key to gaining skill with throwing stars. It is important to set up a safe area to practice that includes a large, sturdy target with plenty of room and without any people, pets, or property that could be damaged within range of the thrown star or a bounce-back from the target. Pine boards attached to a sheet of plywood will make a good target, and I suggest a minimum size of at least four feet square in order reduce the chances of losing stars to off-target throws. When you are just beginning to learn to throw stars, the larger the target is, the better. You can of course create a smaller target on the large one to work on your aim as you improve.</p>
<p>Most movies depict ninjas throwing stars side-arm like a pointy frisbee, with the star held parallel to the ground. While they can certainly be thrown this way, throwing a star side-arm with accuracy is extremely difficult. If you are intent upon learning to throw stars side-arm, make sure to allow lots and lots of room around your target, and be prepared to do a lot of searching for the stars that will likely be flying off in all directions.</p>
<p>To develop throwing accuracy relatively fast, and to get the most efficient use of your ninja training time, I recommend that beginners work on learning to throw stars overhand, similar to the technique used for throwing knives.</p>
<p>If you do go with the overhand technique, I suggest setting up your target with pine boards aligned so that the grain of the wood is perpendicular to the ground. This will make it easier for the stars to stick in the target rather than bounce off.</p>
<p>When starting to throw your stars, I suggest standing approximately twenty feet from the target. This will be relatively close to allow you to hit the target consistently and gain confidence, but it is still far enough away that ricochets are not likely to do any serious harm if you get hit. Eye protection is a good idea just in case.</p>
<p>In order to develop accuracy in a short amount of time, it is important to learn to focus on your target. With the eye on the side of your throwing arm, look straight ahead at the target and keep your eye focused intently on the target at all times.</p>
<p>While gripping the star loosely between your thumb and first finger, bring your arm straight out in front of you until the star is lined up between your eye and the target. Next, raise your hand above your head by bending your elbow. Refocus your vision on the target and then quickly throw the star by straightening your elbow and letting the star go at the moment it enters your line of sight to the target. As with any form of ninja training, once you learn the basic technique, with practice comes skill.</p>
<p>As you get better with throwing stars, you can use smaller targets, or you can try throwing from a longer distance. If you choose to try longer distance throws, it is important to maintain good form and not force the throws to go further, as this will greatly decrease your ability to hit the target.</p>
<p>With repeated practice, you will improve considerably in your throwing star skills. I think you will find throwing stars to be one of the most fun parts of your ninja training.</p>

<p>The unfortunate truth is that the world is full of people who have just enough knowledge, ability, and judgment, to get by. We all seen it. In fact, you probably know and maybe even work with one or two every day!</p>
<p>This is not to say that a black belt, martial arts teacher cannot protect him or herself with the skills they&#8217;ve learned. But, which person would you trust your life to if given the choice&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230; someone who has probably learned and practiced their skills to be used in a sport competition in order to earn a belt, trophy, or&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230; a person who has a background and actual experience with having to deal with real attacks from real aggressors and had to insure that what they were learning would allow them to survive?</p>
<p>I think we both know the answer to that question.</p>
<p>Some Other Considerations for a Good Self-Defense Program for Women and Teen Girls</p>
<p>The following is a partial list of some of the other major differences between self defense for women and men.</p>
<p>* Social Beliefs - from childhood, most girls have been taught that fighting was not &#8220;lady-like.&#8221;</p>
<p>Oh no! What would people say?!</p>
<p>* Situational Attack-Defense - two of the most obvious differences for women that men generally don&#8217;t have to worry about are rape and sexual assault.</p>
<p>The fact that men are usually dealing with the more obvious situations (muggings and competitive (&#8221;oh-yeah! let&#8217;s go!&#8221;-type fighting come to mind). While women, and more and more young girls, are required to deal with subtle tactics like date-rape or being ambushed by a group.</p>
<p>This is complicated with the addition of the strength and size difference between men and women that I talk about. This difference creates and significantly different situation for women, which of course calls for very different defense tactics.</p>
<p>* Misleading or False Information - The majority of people teaching women&#8217;s self-defense mean well. I believe they are honest and not out to purposely lie to you. I believe it&#8217;s just that&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230; these people lack the fundamental, real-world experience to go on - they don&#8217;t know any better - and end up in a blind-leading-the-blind kind of situation.</p>
<p>&#8230; they end up making assumptions that, to them, seem logical and right within their own limited perspective and knowledge.</p>
<p>The contradiction is that we&#8217;re talking about defensive situations here&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230; self-defense for women and teen girls&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230; strategies for women. As opposed to&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230; alphabet soup. Where, if you screw up, you can just empty the pot and start again.</p>
<p>Coming at women&#8217;s self-defense with the wrong skills, or not being prepared for the realities you&#8217;ll have to deal with, could be the worst - last - mistake you ever make.</p>

The martial arts are a system of codified practices and traditions, developed and used for training for combat. Martial arts exhibitions and tournaments are often held to judge the participants&#8217; levels of skill in particular contexts.</p>
<p>There are two types of martial arts sparring: the light or medium contact and the full contact sparring. Both of these forms, however, are used in training and competitions with a clear set of common rules.</p>
<p>In light or medium contact martial arts sparring, a point-based system of light to medium contact sparring in a marked off area of the body is the primary focus of interest. However, the competitors engaging in this style of martial arts sparring are required to wear the right martial arts sparring gear, particularly foam padding.</p>
<p>There are certain parts of the body that are forbidden for contact and require the protection of martial arts sparring gear. Participants must always protect the face and groin. To offer further protection, certain techniques may be prohibited in light or medium contact martial arts. Competitors who are able so perform the solid landing of the employed techniques are generally awarded match points.</p>
<p>Full contact martial arts&#8217; sparring, on the other hand, is often pursued by those who share interest in a realistic unarmed combat. You may notice a lack of gear in this form of sparring.</p>
<p>For example, in Kyokushin, a form of karate, the practitioners fight or engage in martial arts sparring wearing no more than a groin guard or other light gear. The use of full force is considered most important, in the effort to disable the opponent, either by knock out or direct concession of defeat.</p>
<p>Full-contact martial arts&#8217; sparring, unlike other forms of fighting, maintains a full variety of permitted attacks and contact zones on the body. Still, some techniques like biting, striking the groin and attacking the eyes are strictly forbidden.</p>
<p>These attacks are always prohibited, because these areas of the body remain unprotected, even with proper martial arts sparring gear. Above all else, the sport of martial arts sparring was designed to be safe.</p>
<p>In terms of safety, whether you want to engage in light or medium contact or full contact sparring, it is still highly advised that you wear proper martial arts sparring gear regardless of your level of expertise. This rule is in fact included in the overall guidelines of every martial arts sparring tournament or exhibition. Martial arts sparring gear is recommended for use particularly for beginners because sparring could be deadly when done improperly.</p>

<p>The martial arts have a side that few people ever see, it is a soft side planted in philosophical theory and not usually noted by those not in the arts. This softer side is just one great reason for kids to learn martial arts.</p>
<p>Many parents worry that teaching their kids martial arts will make them more aggressive and more likely to fight. The opposite is actually true. And there is a fundamental reason why.</p>
<p>All martial arts have an external component and an internal component. Think of the Chinese yin-yang symbol which literally indicates that everything has an opposite. The earth has sky, fire has water, and good has evil.</p>
<p>The martial arts external side is what we are used to seeing in the movies and on our televisions. External art is the hard, violent and often deadly force characters use to punish or overcome their adversaries. Yet, that is merely Hollywood&#8217;s view.</p>
<p>Martial arts are flamboyant and exciting at their external course. But just as the yin-yang shows, martial arts also has an internal course of philosophical study that pins the artist in search of harmony and peace. One philosophy in particular that can be hard to grasp is consequentialism or more easily understood as the &#8220;right action.&#8221;</p>
<p>Consequentialism is a moral belief that producing the right kinds of consequences is one of the highest moral values a person can have. All actions result in consequences. Martial artists are taught that it is their duty to produce the right kinds of overall consequences, meaning bringing about the most good to the most people.</p>
<p>These principles involve recognition of others while developing greater personal patience and insight. Most martial arts began in the countries of Asia where Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism is rooted. The philosophical ideals of these belief systems permeate the martial arts.</p>
<p>There is a Korean proverb quoted by author Doug Cook that roughly translates, &#8220;Peace within the individual brings peace within the family; peace in the family brings peace in the community; peace in the community, peace in the country and peace throughout the world.&#8221; Delivering the highest moral consequences through &#8220;right action&#8221; can cause a domino effect throughout society and the world.</p>
<p>This one concept is just a small part of the philosophy that sculpts the internal root of the martial artist. Just as there are many kicks and punches, blocks and strikes to learn in the physical root, there are many more pieces to the internal structure.</p>
<p>Any child who is fortunate enough to study martial arts learns exacting physical motions that increase strength and flexibility while learning self defense techniques and improving confidence. But at the same time, they learn to be a better person, a better citizen of the world. They learn that because they can physically defend themselves that they no longer need to. They have learned the &#8220;right action.&#8221;</p>

<p>Now, in order to understand the positives that tai chi has to offer one must examine the relationship between the art and its emphasis on increased oxygen capacity.</p>
<p>When it comes to performing the exercises of tai chi, there is significant emphasis placed on breathing and breath control.</p>
<p>Tai Chi involves a great deal of deep and long breathing combined with arm movements that help open up the lung so that complete capacity of the lungs will be reached and they will be allowed to fill up with air.</p>
<p>Many do not realise the importance of deep breathing and how it helps the body.</p>
<p>For example, did you realize that oxygen is a major factor in the burning of fat? While this does not mean that a tai chi workout will lead to rapid weight loss, it will contribute to weight loss as the exercises burn a low impact amount of calories combined with the calorie burning benefits of increased oxygen intake.</p>
<p>Also, by expanding the amount of oxygen that is taken into the lungs the ability for the lungs to expand their cardiovascular conditioning will significantly increase.</p>
<p>It is the same as doing sprinting to improve the cardio.</p>
<p>But they are very different, one is easy with the body and the other is high impact.</p>
<p>In short, tai chi has a multitude of benefits and if one opts to explore them the positive results will slowly reveal themselves.</p>

<p>Martial arts today have changed from traditional martial  arts to today&#8217;s mixed martial arts.</p>
<p>Martial arts are great for overall conditioning not   to mention the discipline you will build.</p>
<p>But a lot of martial artists are fat and out of shape  and this is sad, it didn&#8217;t used to be that way.</p>
<p>Years ago martial artist&#8217;s were strong, fast and hard,  not weak, slow and soft. Not to long ago I visited  a traditional karate school that I thought about joining,  and I was really disappointed at what I had seen.</p>
<p>The higher belts the instructors were slow and out  of shape, their kicks and punches weren&#8217;t explosive  they were slow and breathing heavy after a few front  kicks.</p>
<p>I stayed until the end of class and then they attempted   some bodyweight exercises pushups and situps this   was embarrassing. There wasn&#8217;t one that could do   25 pushups, I decided not to join.</p>
<p>If you are going to be involved in martial arts you should  be as physically fit as possible.</p>
<p>If you are involved in martial arts do yourself a favor get  into great shape, go hard, be explosive and train hard.</p>
<p>A great way to get into great shape for martial arts is with  bodyweight conditioning exercises. Bodyweight exercises  will build explosiveness, strength, flexibility, balance, and  build stamina like nothing else.</p>
<p>One thing you could do to improve your conditioning  for martial arts is sprinting, sprinting will pay you big when you  are sparring, you won&#8217;t get tired and you will be able to push  harder and longer.</p>
<p>Try this simple sprint workout:</p>
<p>Sprint one minute - walk one minute- sprint one minute -   walk one minute.</p>
<p>Sprint thirty seconds - walk thirty seconds - sprint thirty seconds-  repeat four times.</p>
<p>Sprint fifteen seconds - walk fifteen seconds - sprint fifteen   Seconds repeat four times.</p>
<p>Each sprint is to be done all out, no dogging it- run hard.</p>

<p>If you have a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, then you have a wonderfully gifted child. The ADHD child is spontaneous, creative and can hyper focus on a task they find interesting.</p>
<p>Conversely, this same child is a challenge to parents because they can often be aggressive, hyper, distractible and impulsive. The world views these children as &#8220;hard to handle&#8221; which can permanently harm self-esteem.</p>
<p>All children are impulsive, inattentive and easily distracted from time to time, but the ADHD child lives with these attributes frequently. You can aid your ADHD child by showing her how these character traits are an advantage, not a disadvantage.</p>
<p>In spite of its name, ADHD is not only a lack of attentiveness but the ability to exert more focused attention on a chosen topic. Those with ADHD don&#8217;t lack focus but often focus inappropriately. They have little tolerance for inactivity and are bored quickly.</p>
<p>A sport can be either a positive or nonconstructive experience for all children, but for the ADHD child even more so. Spending excess energy is always good for the ADHD child; however, playing on a team can be difficult for her if she can&#8217;t learn the rules of play or fulfill the role the team needs.</p>
<p>Martial arts, like tae kwon do, can be immensely therapeutic for the ADHD child because it allows aggressive behavior in a safely controlled environment. Directions are given by an instructor and immediately acted upon so there is a sense of relevance and immediate satisfaction.</p>
<p>A martial art like tae kwon do always emphasizes self-confidence, self-esteem and self-control as part of the curriculum. This is important for the ADHD child to have the confidence to believe what many consider negative character issues are actually positives.</p>
<p>Children learn the &#8220;right action&#8221; at the right moment which tempers impulsiveness and turns it into a positive action. Boredom is negligible due to the fast active pace of a martial arts class that is full of jumping and spinning, punching and kicking; the hyperactive child can unleash behavior in an appropriate way and be praised for it.</p>
<p>And martial arts training focuses on respect and tolerance for others while receiving the same regardless of what label may have been given in other environments.</p>
<p>ADHD is not exclusive to boys. Girls are more often diagnosed with ADD which is the same issue without the hyperactivity in equal numbers to boys with ADHD. This &#8220;difference&#8221;, because it&#8217;s not exactly a disorder, is genetic. A rather large study discovered that 25% of ADHD children have one parent with Attention Deficit.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t outgrow Attention Deficit, so it becomes crucial to find ways to lessen the burdens of the disadvantages. Help your child learn to see the constructive aspects of their character and turn those traits into successes.</p>
<p>The child with Attention Deficit bears the same positive characteristics that are cultivated by the successful in society. Artists, entrepreneurs, politicians and athletes are a few of the successful people whom history has described with classic ADHD traits. Some of the most creative, intense, spontaneous, tenacious and quick thinking people in history have probably had ADHD; Thomas Edison, Mozart and Winston Churchill to name but a few. That&#8217;s not bad company at all.</p>

<p>As a kid involved in Judo &amp; later stage in Taichi, push-hands &amp; Taichi sword, I still recollect the times when after the sparring sessions I used to be swollen with pride with the number of bruises or types of pain which I had to endure, but, it is inconceivable at my present age of 40. You may already know that judo is a martial art originally created in Japan. What separates judo from other martial arts like karate or tae-kwon-do, kick boxing however, the thing is that judo is designed specifically with sport competition in mind. Whereas sparring in other martial arts generally requires use of pads and other protective equipment or light contact (pulling of punches or kicks), judo techniques can be performed at full speed and full force while maintaining safety. Judo is great because it teaches a strong ethos of self-defense, tradition, and respect. Nonetheless the rules of judo provide for strangulation techniques in which the blood supply to the brain is blocked by stress on the carotid arteries; such techniques create anoxia and possible coma if the wounded fails to submit.</p>
<p>During our times the protective equipment in use were hardly effective but during these days the equipment during the sparring are world class. Some practitioners believe that physically defeating the enemy, as opposed to winning a sport match by rules, is the only important matter in hand-to-hand combat. Other styles treat martial arts only as matters of self-defense or life-and-death situations. Many of these practitioners may prefer not to participate in most types of rule-based martial art competition, electing instead to study fighting techniques with little or no regard to competitive rules or, perhaps, ethical concerns and the law (the techniques practiced may include attacking vulnerable spots such as the groin or the eyes). Hence the use of Protective Gear is utmost vital. There is a higher rate of lower limb injury in tae-kwon-do (as it relies more heavily on foot techniques) than karate where more commonly found are the limb injuries. Different martial arts have significantly different types and distribution of injuries. Martial arts appear to be safe for young athletes, particularly those at beginner or intermediate levels.</p>
<p>The Protective gears commonly used are::</p>
<p>•	Padding should be used for shins &amp; feet to avert the injuries.<br />
•	Good quality Mats for Rolling &amp; Tumbling to avoid the back from getting overtly strained.<br />
• Head Gear to ward of the various kinds of kicks like roundhouse kick Recent studies conducted on 93 competitive kick-boxers have revealed that head injuries like concussion is common although the lower limb injuries were relatively low compared to other martial arts.<br />
•	Groin Cups which are vital &amp; are mostly used by all Martial artists.<br />
• Mouth Guards, stomach, chest guards forearm and elbow foam guards, use of mouth protectors is a must in martial arts internationally.</p>
<p>Some Do&#8217;s &amp; Don&#8217;ts</p>
<p>•	All male/female participants must wear a groin protector (healthy support with cup) at all times.<br />
•	All participants in sparring activities must wear approved hand pads, foot pads and sparring helmet.<br />
• All sparring pads and helmets must be in good condition and must be safely secured to the wearer (securing straps intact and fully functional, there should be no large punctures or cracks in the pads or helmet).<br />
•	There must be no lingering body fluids on sparring pads and helmets. Sparring pads and helmets must be cleanly maintained.<br />
•	Sparring pads and helmets must be the accurate size for the wearer.<br />
•	It is strongly recommended that all participants in grappling or sparring wear a well-fitted mouth guard<br />
•	Most importantly there should be strict enforcement of rules preventing targeting of uncalled for target areas.</p>
<p>These equipments are normally available in most of the sports shops&#8217; &amp; specialized martial art studios, martial arts equipment dealers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Aikido was developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). His lifetime goal was to develop a martial art based on peace and harmony rather than one that promotes fear and hate. He felt that such a martial art would meet the needs of the contemporary people. His theory of fighting and aiki - the concept of flowing or harmonizing with the energy of the attacker rather then resisting it dominated the core of his teachings.</p>
<p>After a lifetime of study, it is said that he was able to unbalance and throw opponets without body contact. He could quickly defeat his opponet by accessing their vulnerable points and exploiting them. He believed that aikido was the spirit of loving protection for all beings and the solution alleviating a sick and violent society.</p>
<p>Aikido is a specialized martial art form in that it combines various martial arts fusing it together with a strong spiritual belief in peace, love, and harmony with all things. Unlike other martial arts that use a series of punches or kicks to defeat an opponet, aikido focuses on throws, holds, and pressure points.</p>
<p>While aikido is beautiful and flowing, it is also a powerful and effective martial art and should be practiced seriously to avoid injury.</p>
<p>Aikido is made up of two distinct elements - the technique and the spirit. People will often be drawn to one aspect of the art more than the other at first. Some search for personal growth and spiritual transformation, while others are drawn to the flowing, powerful, and effective movements of aikido technique.</p>
<p>Ultimately, one is awakened to the fact that the two seemingly separate elements are woven together so that the spirit is discovered through technique and vice versa.</p>
<p>Aikido is not only about body technique, but also mind technique. Through practice you learn how to move your mind as well as your body. This convergence of body and mind is one of the reasons that aikido is a spiritual discipline. The understanding that all movements must come together in the present action, students of aikido become awake that they can be one with everything around them. The goal of aikido is victory over self, rather than victory over others. Aikido stresses the philosophical way of peace by promoting nonviolent conflict prevention, management, and resolution.</p>
<p>The way of peace is very important. Always remember that warriors do not fight so fiercely because they hate the enemy; they fight fiercely because they love the people they protect.</p>
<p>Aikido, the meaning, can be broken into three parts: AI: Harmony, Ki: Energy, Spirit, and Life, and Do: The Way, or Path.</p>
<p>Ai is the concept of flowing with an attack.</p>
<p>Ki is energy that exists in all things and is the common element linking all of us together. Ki allows us to feel interconnected with everything and everyone.</p>
<p>Do is the basis of personal identity and the loss of that identity into the greater way of the universe. The awareness of the greater way is the basis of spirituality in aikido.</p>
<p>In short, aikido is based on peace and love and is a vehicle for personal growth as well as being a respected martial art form.</p>
