Most people think that it takes vast amounts of time to learn kung fu. The idea of spending an entire life learning kung fu is common. Actually, using the logic of modern times, kung fu can be learned in an amazingly short period of time. True.

It was difficult to learn kung fu back in the seventies. There just werent that many schools available. Even when I found a school, I never knew if it was going to be any good.

I remember studying in one system for years before learning one of the Wing Chun Forms. Then it turned out that the form was only a variation, and nobody really knew how it was applied. Still, I kept looking and searching and practicing.

As time went on I began to assemble whole systems, and what I learned was sort of interesting…kung fu is a bit of a mangled mess. Oh, it works, but the learning method is like a Chinese fire drill. It seems that every master, since day one, has insisted upon changing crucial parts of every system.

Using physics and good old western logic, I began taking arts apart and putting them back together. The results were sometimes disastrous, and sometimes incredibly mind blowing. Eventually I formulated a method for this procedure, of analyzing and handling arts, which I called Matrixing.

One of the most intriguing art forms I came across was called Fut Ga. Fut Ga has Shaolin forms, but it has been thoroughly mangled. Mangled or not, within one of the forms of this system I found a footwork that was incredibly commonsense.

By practicing this footwork a student learned how to go to and fro, and side to side. He also learned how to go diagonal, virtually at the same time. This concept of going diagonal I called angulation.

I used Matrixing to analyze the potentials of this form. There were an amazing wealth of good, solid techniques. This form, and variations of it, provided the basis for the art I call the Shaolin Butterfly.

The Shaolin Butterfly is the fastest way to learn kung fu there is. Techniques are smooth and conceptual and leap into the mind. Any student who wants to learn his own kung fu faster, or just pick up a whole system in an incredibly fast piece of time, should practice the Shaolin Butterfly.
