St Louis Muay Thai: How to Choose a Muay Thai Kickboxing School
Thai Boxing, or Muay Thai, is a skill that traces its roots to the sixteenth century. During this age of wars, close combat with swords and other weapons became clumsy and arms, legs, knees, and elbows were more efficient.
It fell out of use as modern warfare adjusted, but then this war art became a sport instead, protecting participants’ hands with gloves. As this technique grew in popularity as a sport, it became incorporated into what is usually called ‘boxing tactics.’
This form basically uses martial arts-style kicks with boxing style punches for full contact competition. Whenever you hear someone talk about kickboxing or Thai Boxing, they are discussing Muay Thai. Kickboxing is the most common current term.
Now, choosing the best school for your courses is the most important step. Look up all the schools in your area that offer it.
Then go to some of them to find the best ones. Look at how the classes are conducted.
Is the teacher expecting the class to learn merely be repeating his motions? Or does he go to the trouble to instruct each part of the move with each student? As with any other profession, just because an instructor is highly qualified and perhaps has a wall full of awards and trophies doesn’t he is a good teacher.
Some of the schools you visit might have different class levels. In this case, you should observe the class that would be appropriate for you.
Try to talk to the owner of the school as well. In any good school these individuals will be willing to openly discuss your potential instruction. Question his qualifications and education, and whether he maintains membership in any professional groups.
Kickboxing is a physically challenging, competitive sport. If it not properly taught, the student will become disillusioned and even frightened.
Another valuable idea in finding the right school for you, or someone close to you, is to talk with other students in the school. Find out how they feel about the style, the sport, the competition, the instructors, and notice the level of enthusiasm with which they talk about it to you. The cleanliness of the facility is very important.
Even though this is a personal decision for each person, you should make sure you don’ make the wrong choice and lose interest in the sport. So you can see that it is critical to take these steps to find the best school. You’ll know the right one when you do.
