Violence is not the goal or aim of any form of martial art. The intent of martial arts is, and has always been, to train, educate, and improve the mental health and physical well-being of the participant. It has always held true that some have used the martial arts against people in violent acts, but this is clearly against the majority of their original intents.

The question on everyones mind, are martial arts self-defense? Well, yes and no. For instance, martial arts obviously have self defense applications since they do contain some self defense moves. However, self defense isn’t the only aspect here. They also contain many more aspects that become more of a lifestyle rather than just simply learning some self defense. This is why martial artists train for many years at a time and most self defense practitioners only need to train for a few months to defend themselves. Instead of training for the entire art, they only train for the most applicable techniques of self defense to keep them safe in the streets.

* a woman who wants to be able to protect herself, or…
* A Parent looking for a self-defense program for your child
This point cannot be emphasized enough, because, like practically nothing else in your life…
… your life could depend on your making the right choice.

Does the word art bring mortal combat to mind?
Probably not.
The martial arts have a side that few people ever see, it is a soft side planted in philosophical theory and not usually noted by those not in the arts. This softer side is just one great reason for kids to learn martial arts.
Many parents worry that teaching their kids martial arts will make them more aggressive and more likely to fight. The opposite is actually true. And there is a fundamental reason why.
