A naked cook named Corobus was the first man to win in the Olympics, but then again there was only one event called the Stade a race of about 210 yards. Which was first held in 776BC! Since then the Olympics continued every four years until 393 CE where it was abolished by the Christian emperor Theodosios as he thought the Olympics were influenced by witchcraft and the devil.

As luck would have it, 1500 years later a man called Pierre De Coubertin who was French had the idea to regenerate and set out a new era for the Olympics.

It’s not always been a smooth ride for the Olympics from those early days it’s true that there have been some problems. However, the true spirit of the games have really built camaraderie for each competing team. It is thought that the 2012 Olympics are going to be spectacular, the best of event in the world. New sports are being added and what with the latest technological will make this the most watched event in the history of TV.

Being able to take part in cheering on the Olympians gives people throughout the world excitement and wonder watching the competitors give their all and push their talents and their bodies to the ultimate test. The originators of the Olympics back in 776 BC would be proud of where the games have gone. The basic premise is the same to push athletes to their max, but the games themselves have become an international harbinger of good will.

It is sad at times when countries for whatever reason have had to withdrawn or were banned. However, the majority enter the games with a positive attitude towards having fun and enjoyment. The games have to be the number one dream on all athletes minds.

The Olympic grounds in London will become permanent reminders for this wonderful historic event. Londoners are some of the proudest people in the world and they cant wait to show off their countries best city to the fans and athletes of the world. ” the city of London rules OK, the Olympics 2012 rules OK, bring it on!

My first grappling tournament was a nerve-racking experience. I had not eaten in four hours, which is a long story, before I hit the mat. So I saw a little bit of adversity even before it hit the mat but I still did, as I placed second in the grappling tournament because I was able to stay relaxed in bad situations. Even against opponents who I knew nothing about and especially didn’t know how long they had grappled in their careers, I was able to stay relaxed. So the first key in your first grappling tournament, and if you can do this you will do well, is to stay relaxed, and with that in mind here some tips to help you get ready for your first grappling tournament

The most obvious thing to do, but overlooked, is to look over the rules before you hit the mat. Before you start grappling, know that there have been many competitors in competition who have been disqualified, because they did not look at the rules beforehand and end up using an illegal moves or slamming their opponent to their mat. So make sure to look over the rules very carefully. This way, you have less chance of being disqualified for rule that you did not pay attention to. If you end up advancing beyond the first round it would be horrible to lose, because you did not know the rules. So you must be very careful about what moves you’re using. I recommend that you train with those rules three to four weeks at least before competition with your partner or your training dummy or in your mind at least. That way, you have minimal chance of using a move that is not allowed in the competition; so that you do not ruin all the hard work you put into to tournament during the tournament.

Pre-match rituals will help you be as prepared as possible before you roll on the mat. NBA players are notorious for having rituals before they shoot their free-throw shots. This helps them feel relaxed and at ease amidst of the distractions of the game. So you would do well in programming yourself with the pregame ritual. You must feel as relaxed as possible before you start rolling with someone you know nothing about, because you never know what moves they may pull out of their hat or what sweeps they may use. You must be prepared for everything and you must be prepared to stay relaxed, no matter what situation comes to you, because if you feel stress it will weaken you it will cause your adrenal system to flood and you will feel tired. Before, you should so make sure you have a pregame ritual worked out for yourself whether it’s stretching exercising, whatever it may be make sure you have it.

When youre nervous and on the mat, I recommend that you also have a ritual here. So that you can feel relaxed as possible, and when I talk about a ritual, we could be talking about something as simple as snapping your fingers three times, if you can code this to the feeling of being relaxed and calm when you snap your fingers together, you should be able to feel calm. This technique comes from Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP, which is the study of how the brain encodes information including feelings. So you can code any feeling you want to any ritual that you need. I recommend a ritual that cannot be stopped in the ring. For example, if you are caught in an arm bar, that is almost there, then clapping your hands together three times is probably not a good ritual because you are not going to be able to do it. So we’re talking about finer motor movements, you’ll just have to be careful that you know your sweeps so that while you’re doing your ritual youre not going to hurt yourself when you roll. If you do choose snapping your fingers you’ll have to be careful so that they’re not crushed underneath you and your opponent as you roll into another position.

Of course before you enter your grappling tournament, you should have already been doing some sort of exercises I recommend some of Frank Shamrock’s home work out because it’s based around grappling. You want a workout be as close to the competition that you’re entering or the activity that you’re doing is possible. So the system best way to be ready for the tournament. You may feel stress, which will help you because you’ve learned how to deal with it before hand during your workouts.

I hope you’ve taken notes, because all these tips will help you tremendously when you get into your grappling tournament and hopefully all the skill that you have cultivated will come out as long as you stay relaxed and you are properly trained for the tournament mentally and physically. And remember you should have the right rituals to go along with those attributes. Staying relaxed will keep you out of trouble in the grappling tournament when you roll into submissions as you will, and will help you get out of them. You must stay relaxed. I wish you luck in all your grappling endeavors

I was skinny kid once, and I grew up as the smallest kid in school. So, as a consequence, I got picked on a lot. I became very shy and introverted and I didnt like talking to people, because I learned it was harder to be picked on if I gave them less ammunition. Plus, at home, I was the youngest of all the boys and they let me know about it all the time. They loved me, but they picked on me. Anyway, growing up, whether at home or at school, the bullies found me, so I totally understand how someone feels when they get picked on.

Thats why the show Bully Beatdown is so interesting to me. Being a victim of several bullies at home and school gave me the basic nerd dream, of some day watching my enemies go down hard. Its a nerds dream. Many bullies love to abuse their power, especially when their big. The 2nd episode Bully Beatdown was no different, his guy was at least 64 and 250 and he was picking on his roommates (usually not a good idea, but he was doing it anyway). They (the victims) were two guys of average size, you know, 156 to 180 maybe, definitely not in his league, and didnt look like they knew how to fight. So they did what any self respecting nerd would do, they called MTV and Jason Mayhem Miller to exact revenge. After much goading, the bully did accept the match, and got a pounding from ex NFL/pro MMA fighter Michael Westbrook. Who gave the bully the pounding that every bully deserves, he TKOd him in the 2nd with vicious right crosses (pretty much his only weapon after knocking the bully silly with his left hook), and also submitting him 4 times in the first, giving the bully only a total of $1,000 dollars out of the $10,000 dollars possible, the rest going to the victims of the bullying.

What can you learn from Bully Beatdown? Thats a great question, and heres what you can learn from Bully Beatdown. 1. A little training goes a long way, Michael Westbrook actually didnt do anything too technically advanced in either round, because he didnt have to. The bully was over matched, and Westbrook only pulled a sweet omaplata to a crufix (thats advanced) once. He was fairly nice to him the rest of the fight (well, not nice, but not as bad as he could of hurt him, he did TKO him viciously in the 2nd when he smelled a knockout though). So against your basic bully, you arent going to need much training, unless the size difference is great, and Royce Gracie proved in the first UFCs that if the bully doesnt understand your game and hes bigger than you, and you can drag him to the ground, then he is going down. So get a ground game ad get your hands up to par (at least learn something).

In the 2nd episode (at least the 2nd one I saw). Our hated bully meets his MMA Pro fighter and it is ex NFL player Michael Westbrook and he looks worried and scared. Now, we all can’t have the size and intimidating muscles of Michael Westbrook, but what you can do is let people know that you know people like him. The best way to do this is to wear your shirt of your gym, this is all the better made by actually listing what you train in on the shirt if it doesn’t already list it. Not only will they be intimidated by what you might know (because bullies want easy fights not ones they could probably lose face in) but who you might know. That might be the ultimate deterrent to bullies.

So to summarize, learn some mixed martial arts and do what you can to not look like youre an easy target. The harder and more of a fight you look like you can muster, the less likely they are to attack you. Watch Bully Beatdown and get some idea from the pros about how to go about doing things. And I promise you, youll have higher self confidence in on time, when dealing with a bully.

Royce Gracie broke down barriers when he won UFC 1. While opening everyones eyes to grappling, he also did something that would change martial arts forever. He was beating martial arts black belts and proving to them that they were missing a vital element of their fighting arts, the ground game. Fast forward to a few short years later, everyone is being told by martial arts business gurus that they have to teach mixed martial arts (or MMA) to their students to get some of the money that is floating around. Forget that they havent trained in it before; forget they dont know the style. Theyve never competed, never had anyone compete before, and probably have never thought of fighting in a cage (even saying in the past, that it was barbaric and they want nothing to do with it, but they still found the gall to hang up a shingle and say, hey I teach MMA.

So the problem becomes obvious here, many schools are blatantly ripping off the unsuspecting because they have a belt and the talk with authority about a subject they know virtually nothing about. Theyve never competed or studied grappling close enough to teach it, and its all second hand information that is propagated and spread throughout communities, all while defrauding the masses. To give you a better idea, let me tell you a story.

Mom and dad bring in little Tommy because the bully at school has been picking on him. McDojo has just hung up its shingle for mma, they picked up a couple of books about grappling and mma and decide that they should catch the wave and get the money thats floating around out there while grappling. They quickly develop a belt system around it and start marketing and teaching it. Poor Tommy and his parents are roped into the hype and the child earns a brown belt in MMA (which dont exist and neither do grandmasters in mma). A bully decides its a good time to test poor Tommy, hearing of his new fighting prowess, and figures it a good way to up his street cred (the bullies). Tommy proceeds to defend himself and low and behold. Tommy gets beat up. Why? His sweeps are wrong, his submission holds arent tight, and hes never actively sparred against someone who has tried to at least make contact on him. He is embarrassed and the parents blame themselves for not enrolling him in more classes, Tommy blames himself because he didnt work hard enough, and the school owner blames Tommy and his parents for not enrolling him in more classes and scolds Tommy for getting in the fight in the first place and demotes his belt rank.

How do you fix this problem? Check out the instructor before training with them; make sure they have valid verifiable experience. Make sure that they actually have competitors or the teacher has competed himself or herself. Make sure that they come from someone who has actually competed in MMA or grappling tournaments, make sure you know what youre getting into because you accept someones word for it (training). If you can do this, you will always make sure your child, or yourself, is getting the best MMA/grappling experience possible.
