The martial arts, if you want to be really honest, were developed in third world countries. Of course, a few centuries ago, let alone a millennia or two, every country was a third world country. The unfortunate truth this fact of reasoning leads to, however, is that the martial arts are taught using old, ancient and outdated methods.
A fellow is told to practice the horse stance. He is given horse stance forms to do. And, after a few years, sure enough, he becomes able to grip the ground pert good.

One of the things I heard about, when I first began learning the martial arts, was that the hips are the cornerstone of power. Being involved in Chinese Kenpo, I didn’t understand, for that art is not set up for hip power. I kept reading about this concept of hip power, however, and how it was developed by the Japanese classical Karate arts.
To have hip power one must learn how to keep the hips stable. Tilting the hips is used for kicks, and most other moves are done with the hips as a stable base. This interesting concept I came to grips with through a simple exercise.

The Tried and True Method for Attaining Moving Power in the Martial Arts!

The second time I ever slow walked I was in Willits, California putting on a karate demonstration for a couple of hundred kids. As I finished the presentation I noticed a fellow standing at the far end of the gymnasium. At a distance, he was big and rather ominous.
He didn’t have a kid, so what was he doing at a demo for kids? I began slow walking towards him. I walked slower and slower, and time began to stretch and stretch. It seemed to take forever for me to walk the hundred feet to him.

Nobody else knows about this, but it is the best kick I know. This is an amazing kick, but it’s true, and I never see anybody else use it. Not in tournaments, not in the MMA, not even in good, old commercial school freestyle.
This kick is fast, as fast as thought, and if I am not careful, and don’t pull it and merely plant it gently, it is a real rib breaker. This kick is powerful, it is probably the most powerful kick in all the martial arts. And, every time I use it, I get it.

The bully charges out of the alley and tosses a whole, darned trash can at you! Do you ask him to take that garbage can back because you’re only on your ninth Karate lesson and haven’t reached the deflecting the garbage can lesson? Or do you ask him go away because, here it comes, you forgot to pay your dues at the local dojo?
