I forecasted completely wrong in my preceding assessment of the match up. Kind of. I did declare that Silva would definitely own the mid range of punching. He failed to make it happen, yet somehow Quinton Jackson did.

My ally Kyle Bruce realized something weird when we discussed a common friend’s battle. “I observed a lot of his fights, when he gets concerned; he tries to use his double leg takedown every time.”

It made me ponder something. If you get in trouble, you cannot help but constantly return to your key martial art (which that means a wrestler will try for a double leg takedown, a Thai kick boxer will kick, and also a Jiu-jitsu chap will draw guard.

The days leading to the UFC 110 were filled with UFC news, stories and rumours about how the contenders condition themselves for their fights. Recently, UFC followers have been watching closely how former champion Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira conditioned himself mentally for the match with unbeaten fighter Cain Velasquez in Sydney, Australia.

The main event was predicted to attract a large crowd of fans and supporters, as the Acer Arena apparently sold out to some 16,500 spectators, making it the second most sold out event in the UFC’s 16 year history.

According to the latest UFC news, Abu Dhabi is going to be the hotspot in April for MMA as lightweight contender Frankie Edgar takes on BJ Penn for what’s been described as the biggest fight of Edgar’s life. You can be certain that both physical and mental conditioning is included in Penn and Edgar’s bout preparation.

While many training programs focus on preparing the body to fight, a key component of any serious mixed martial arts training covers the mental aspect of fighting. A fighter may be trained to the peak of physical condition, but if he can’t deal with the mental aspects of pain, if he lets his opponent “psych” him out, or if he fails to see “tells” in his opponents’ moves, all that physical conditioning will have been for nothing.

If you listen to the comments made by experienced fighters in UFC News interviews, you’ll hear one common thread: The importance of mental conditioning.

When most people think of mixed martial arts, they think only of the physical aspect of the competition, they don’t consider all of the mental preparation that goes into competing in this dynamic sport. Without the right mental preparation however, even the most physically gifted competitor will lose to an equal who is more mentally prepared.

Take for instance, Krzysztof Soszynski.
